Watercolour over traces of pencil.

27.2 by 39.3 cm., 10 ½ by 15 ½ inches.

Provenance:

By descent from Baron Charles de X, until sold at Rossini, Paris, 12th June 2002, lot 13;

Private Collection, UK.

Laporte trained as an artist in London under John Melchior Barralet and became an accomplished topographical artist working in watercolour and bodycolour. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from 1785.

Laporte drew a number of Italian views in the 1820s and 1830s but it is not recorded whether he visited Italy or whether they are based on the works of other artists.

This may be the picture exhibited at the British Institution in 1831, no. 261 as `View of Tivoli.’ Another view of Tivoli by Laporte, signed and dated 1790, is illustrated in Iolo Williams, Early English Watercolours, 1952, pl. LII, no.111.
