Impressive ebonised break arch case with finely cast ormolu mounts, raised stepped plinth resting on outswept cast bracket feet, surmounted by gilded finials and pad top with ormolu figure. The back door of the case still retains two original repair labels.

Gilded silk lined sound frets to the sides of the case and rear door.

Brass dial with gilded spandrels, raised silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and half hour markers, engraved silvered subsidiary dials to the arch for strike / silent and time regulation with original ‘blued’ steel hands.

Substantial brass plated eight day spring driven movement with anchor escapement stamped ‘W& H’ to the backplate with Ting-Tang striking on the quarters and chiming the hour on two coiled gongs.  Circa 1890.

‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists Winterhalder and HoFfmeir (W&H) as working in Schwarzenbach (Germany) from 1840 to 1895 when they moved to Neustadt. The firm ceased trading in 1932.
