Understated 1930s Kashan Rug.

2.02 x 1.35 m.

Masterfully worked in lustrous high-quality wool, this 1930s Kashan rug features a series of floral and vegetal motifs, in a restrained palette of ochre red over a soft ivory ground. While sharing many of the characteristic drawings of earlier Kashan works, this piece departs from the traditional central medallion layout, opting instead for a more open, balanced design, with the uniformity of colour across the border and the central field - rather than the conventional stark contrast – working to give the piece a strikingly modern feel.

The city of Kashan, among the best-known and highly ranked Persian rug-weaving centers, first rose to prominence in the 16th Century, under the Safavid Dynasty. These workshops earned a reputation for producing many of the most highly sought-after rugs of the Classical period and continued their work into the early 20th Century.

Preserved in very good to excellent condition, the fringes and borders all fully retained, this carpet would make a fine addition to any setting.
