Two Antique Silver George IV Wine Coolers each on spreading circular foot chased with vine borders, the melon fluted bodies with vine rims and bifurcated scroll handles.

Both are engraved with a coat-of-arms and a crest, each with earl’s coronet above, both with plain cylindrical liners on later wooden plinths applied with plaques engraved with presentation inscription and numerous facsimile signatures.

These magnificent Wine Coolers can be used with or without the plinths as they just rest on the top.

One cooler and liner made by Kirkby Waterhouse & company the other Waterhouse, Hodson and Company, the liner made by J & N Creswick. One Made in 1821 and the other 1826.

The arms are those of Bingham quartering others impaling Brundenell, for George, 3rd Earl of Lucan (1800-1888) and his wife Anne (d.1877),daughter of Robert, 6th Earl of Cardigan (1760-1837), whom he married in 1829.

These would have been The Earl of Lucan's wedding present and later when the detachable plinths were made given as a wedding present to the First World War hero and flying ace Alec Stratford Cunningham-Reid.

The Earl of Lucan gave the fateful order for the light brigade to charge the Russian guns in October 1854 although was exonerated in a court martial.

Despite Lucan being married to the 7th Earl of Cardigans sister, Cardigan who was also a commanding officer in the Crimea had an intense dislike for him.

The inscription on the bases reads “Presented to Captain A.S. Cunningham-Reid, D.F.C., M.P. by his friends in both Houses of Parliament on his marriage 12th May 1927 (2).
