The Truly Astonishingly Rare “ St Martin Le Grande” York Roof Angels. Circa 1450.
This group of six mid 15th century English oak roof angels are probably unique to have stayed together, occasionally one or maybe two will appear but to have all six remaining together after almost 600 years is astonishing.
Each angel stands almost 28” high , carved in deep relief with curly windswept hair. All wearing long tunics and holding a shield. Outstanding colour and ancient patination.
They would have been a sight to behold in the roof of the church.
These amazing roof angels were rescued from the St Martin le Grande Church in York after it was bomb damaged in 1942, by the architect George Pace who would become the architect to oversee the church restoration and the previous owner of the angels.
Probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to own these six angels.
Provenance- St Martin le Grande Church, York.
Thence the George Pace collection.
