Condition report

An extraordinary almost life-size trade sign figure depicting a standing Native American Indian Figure, depicted wearing a stylised headdress, and with direct provenance to a Scottish Private collection. Hand carved and painted, the figure was discovered with thick and heavily discoloured historic brown varnishes, which have now been professionally removed by dry scraping, to reveal the original palette and details beneath. During the dry scraping and conservation process almost all the original polychrome decoration was revealed intact, having been protected by the varnishes for many years. The front half of the figure's right foot and the pipe were missing and have been restored. There are still evident areas of paint loss and various incidental losses, splits, and blemishes throughout. Apart from the pipe and the front of the right foot, which have been fully restored, there are minor areas of cosmetic retouching to the polychrome decoration. However, overall the quality, integrity and authenticity of this sculpture are of exceptional merit and it is a significant museum quality trade sign.
