Sir Edward Pellew, later Viscount Exmouth (1757-1833) bought the estate of Canonteign in the Teign valley, eight miles south-west of Exeter, from the Helyar family in the 1790s.

White Abbott and his fellow artist Francis Towne were frequent visitors to its secluded woodland.
