Square Format Azerbaijani Kilim, circa 1900s.

1.88 x 1.70 m.

Azerbaijan has a rich history of rug weaving, stretching back several centuries. The country stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their creativity and diversity. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after, well-known for their wide range of designs and dynamic use of vegetable-dyed colours.

This c. 1900 flatweave is a fine example, with a tight weave lending a crisp clarity to its drawing, and a creative, spontaneous, design, which, despite its age, gives the work a modern feel. Its earthy palette includes a range of terracotta, ivory and camel tones, all in gracefully aged organic dyes.

Retained in very good condition, this charming tribal piece would serve well either as a carpet or as a decorative wall hanging.

A characterful piece, which would make a welcome addition to any space.
