A small antiquarian sofa in the Charles II style upholstered in the original green cut velvet.

Circa 1880-1900.

This settee was inspired by 17th century models which were plentiful in France under Louis XIII and XIV and can be seen in Abraham Bosse’s engravings of domestic interiors but they were only found at Court and the houses of great noblemen in this country.

Very few upholstered settees or couches survive from the 17th century and those that do can be found at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent. This settee evokes the charm and character of these early-upholstered pieces injecting period atmosphere into any interior. The cut-velvet and trimmings are beautiful and intact and the wear adds to the charm.

A pair of tasselled finials surmount the rectangular back which has a deep upholstered panel and a narrow bar below in typical Carolean-style. The arms project from the main back panel and are supported by the turned legs which are joined by a high rectangular front stretcher and two side stretchers. The whole frame is upholstered in the original, floral, cut-velvet and faced with the original braid and fringe and the feet with original tassels.

Medium: Cut Velvet.

Origin: England.

Condition: Good.
