Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945).
The Church of St. Seine l'Abbaye by Moonlight.
Oil on canvas. Signed W.R. and dated 1906.
In its original moulded and gilt frame, bearing a label printed with the words "Bury 1907", perhaps a reference to an exhibition.
Provenance: Thought to have been in the collection of the artist's daughter Betty Holliday.
In the early years of the 20th century Rothenstein frequently went on painting holidays with his younger brother Albert, who painted one of his best landscape oils on this particular trip. This accomplished painting is reminiscent of works by his friends and contemporaries, Walter R. Sickert, William Nicholson and James Pryde.
