A silver mounted engraved coconut cup.

The body of the cup is set with a silver plaque engraved with a heraldic thistle.

The coconut is decorated with a rural scene of farmhands, alongside a cow and pigs feeding from a trough, a thatched cottage peaks over a fence behind them. Beside this humble farming scene stands a grand house, from which the landowner can survey their estate and workforce.

Unusually it retains its original silver mounted coconut lid, which is engraved with alternating skulls and shells amidst garlands of flowers, a silver finial surmounts this.

The cup is supported by a silver foot, the base with the silver makers mark ’SC’ for Samuel Crespell II.

The coconut was most likely made for a Scottish patron, the silver mounts made in London during the first half of the 19th century.
