Silver Monteith with Chinoiserie Decoration.
Made by Daniel & John Wellby.
London 1919.
Monteiths were designed for cooling drinking glasses.
The glasses would hang by the foot into the bowl, which was filled with iced water.
Chinoiserie or Oriental decoration was first seen on English silver in the last half of the 17th century.
The detachable collar can be removed and then used as a punch bowl.
Also very useful as fruit bowl etc. or as an ice bucket and would hold two bottles nicely.
The collar is very tight fitting and can be a little tricky to put on and remove.
