Set of Fourteen Japanese Silver Underplates/charger plates (950 Pure)

A Beautiful Set of Fourteen Japanese Silver Underplates (950 pure). The borders of the plates have a shell and scroll design. The set are made by Japan’s Oldest Silversmith, Kichigoro Uyeda. The set would bring an elegance to any dinner party. These are about an inch ( 2.54 Cms) wider than regular dinner plates so perfect as underplates as well as dinner plates.

K. Uyeda (Kichigoro Uyeda) are likely to be the oldest established Japanese silversmiths still in business. Founded in 1884 as a souvenir store for foreign tourists, it is still in business today.

In 1923, The Uyeda store was opened in the recently built Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, designed by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

There were many famous people among Uyeda's customers: American baseball players Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, actress Marilyn Monroe, diplomat Henry Kissinger and his wife, professor and American diplomat Edwin Reischauer and his wife. 

After the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923, the Uyeda  store was  moved to the Yarakucho neighbourhood, located near the Ginza district. Both the first and the second floor of the building were designed in a compromise between East and West style.
