Sailor's Woolwork Woolie of a Royal Navy Ship with Flag of Nations Surround,
Circa 1875
This fine example of a Flag of Nations woolwork is unusual because most often the ship in this type of woolwork is an afterthought whereas here the ship is rendered as finely as is imaginable with three-dimensional rigging. The woolie depicts a portside view of a Royal Navy three-masted ship under steam and sail flying the white ensign from the mizzenmast and a white ensign banner from the fore and main masts within a circular central panel. The lower sails of the foremast and the mainmast are furled as the ship is under steam with gray smoke issuing from the funnel.
The central panel is surrounded by a large number of flags including that of the United States, each with a separate hanging tassel attached at the top. The whole is surmounted by a theatrical curtain to each side ad a valence above in shades of red with yellow details. Unusually, below is a checkerboard ground of the theater stage.
