Sailor's Woolwork

Sailor's Woolwork or Woolie of A Royal Navy Ship Under Full Sail

Circa 1865

Textile

The small sailor's woolwork or woolie as they are known, depicts a finely wrought portside view of a Royal Naval Ship flying the White Ensign. The rigging is well defined with light and dark threads.

The ship sails on a green and white sea with a white wake surrounding the hull of the ship as it plows through the waves. A white ensign banner flies from the Mainmast. Twisted black and white braids have been placed along the guard rail of the top deck.

The wool has a tight cross-stitch creating a pleasing image with a gilt slip and a maple frame.

On the reverse of the wool painted in white on the backboard is the inscription "R.C. Willis, China 1894, HMS Conquest". Unfortunately, the HMS Conquest at that time was a steel hulled ship and quite different so the inscription remains a bit of a mystery.
