Condition report

A delightfully strong and well defined early naive painting, signed by John Read of Bedford, a well regarded English naïve school painter of the C18th. Painted in oils on canvas this work is in fine original condition, the canvas has been professionally conserved, strip lined and the surface cleaned of accumulated dirt, to reveal a bold composition and excellent fresh original colours. The original stretcher is indistinctly inscribed in pen and ink "Butler, Carver and Gilder, Huntingdon" and the canvas is housed in a period carved, ebonised and gilded frame. The horse and dog are both depicted in strong graphic silhouette against the light background in a classic static naïve style and the spacial relationship between them and the large tree is critical to the success of the composition and is further enhanced by the delightfully executed details and colouring.
