An early 19th century boxwood pill silverer, having four lugs to secure the removable lid. The whole, raised on a concave stem and stepped circular foot, has a rich colour and a slightly ink stained patination.
These pill silverers were used by apothecaries, having made their pills, they would be moisturised with mucilage of acacia and then put in these containers with a silver leaf, gently rolling the pills within, which would coat them ready for storage in a bottle.
