An excellent quality boxwood and brass hinged sliding foot rule, stamped George Barnsley and Sons, Sheffield. This firm was the world's leading producer of files and cutting tools for the shoe making industry, founded in 1836 in Wheeldon Street, Sheffield, moving to larger premises in 1849. The firm closed in 2003. The whole has a good colour and patination.
