A large 18th century sycamore negus strainer, having twin concave sided handles with rounded and stepped ends. It has a hole in on one of the handles for hanging up, probably alongside a list of beverages in a tavern or coaching house. The whole has a pleasing pale colour and retains a patination.
Negus was a beverage imported by Colonel Francis Negus, a soldier who died in 1732. It was a beverage made from wine, spices, lemon and hot water and was drunk in the 18th and 19th centuries. These strainers follow a typical form and are keenly collected and difficult to find.
