A well turned Welsh late 18th century sycamore cawl bowl, having an angled lip, incised lines and a raised shallow foot. It is considered that items that have been repaired had great sentimental value, and occasionally one finds that an iron staple has been inserted across the split or shrinkage crack, as in this instance, presumably done by a village blacksmith. There is an interesting article on this subject, page 188 in Treen for the Table by Jonathan Levi. It has a pale colour and original patination, and is lighter on the interior through use.
