A good William and Mary period lignum vitae pestle and mortar, having a well used interior. The slightly concave body, with reeded bands and incised lines, has a small amount of patinated chipping on the base, which has an interesting deep chuck mark, where the block of lignum vitae was held in place on the pole lathe. The whole has a medium colour, attractive grain and original patination.
English Circa 1700.
Pestle: 9.75 in. (25 cm.) long.
