A very good 18th century stable candle holder, which were used in stables with the candle contained within a wire cage to stop it toppling over onto the straw causing a fire. The brass handle also acts as a traveller to raise or lower the candle. This example is beautifully made with a lovely turned and stepped fruitwood base, and it has an excellent colour and patination. It has ancient shrinkage cracks and old worm holes.
