Regency Miniature Mahogany Breakfast Table.

An exceptional quality Regency period miniature mahogany centre, or breakfast table. Having superbly figured circular tilting top over turned central column and elegant four splay base, retaining original brass castors.

Sometimes there is debate as to the original purpose of antique miniature furniture. There are predominantly two types, that which was made as an apprentice piece and that which was made as a salesmans sample piece. There was also some miniature furniture of a particular scale which would have been made as dolls house furniture.

This particular georgian miniature centre table was almost certainly made as a sample piece. That means that it would have been constructed effectively as a scale model in the workshop, using exactly the same painstaking methods as its full size counterparts, before being dispatched for months at a time with a selection of other miniature furniture items, in the travelling salesmans horse and cart. It would then be presented to prospective clients and orders for the full size variants taken.

Miniature breakfast tables like this are found in a wide variety of qualities, designs and sizes throughout the 19th century and were clearly very much in demand in terms of almost every grand, and even relatively modest house, requiring tables for the middle of their rooms.

This table dates to the early 19th century and is constructed from good quality mahogany timber, which retains a lovely rich colour and patina.

Still in full working order the table has been inspected by our skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in good condition before being presented for sale.
