Regency Gilt Overmantle Mirror.

A delightful 19th century Regency period giltwood and gesso overmantle mirror. Having triple sectioned mirror plate bordered by elegant half turned columns and lotus leaf carved decoration.

As the name suggests overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian and Regency homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sized and qualities and this is a particularly nice, but at the same time not excessively elaborate example.

This particular example has had the gilding cleaned, polished and improved at some point in the not too distant past, therefore it boasts a fabulous lustre and feel to it. The mirror plates are quite possibly original and it's worth noting that there is a significant amount of silvering to the right hand one in particular adding great character.

There are of course various old marks, scuffs, scrapes, scratches etc which are consumate with the age of the piece. As with most of our stock this item has been cleaned and polished in the traditional fashion within our workshops by our skilled and experienced craftsman before being offered for sale, meaning it is ready to go straight into the home.

Circa 1830.

Height 32in.
Width 60in.
Depth 5.5in.
