Regency mahogany bergere chair of a good large size; original colour and patina, carved reeding on the legs, seat rail, arm rests and the framing around the back; original caning on the side and the back; the seat is webbed and has never been caned; the castors also original.
Provenace: Kilmurry Estate, Formay, Cork. The chair was in the gate house and was said to have come from the main house. For about 250 years Kilmurry was the home of the Grant family. The marquess of Zetland stayed there in the 1890s whilst fishing the Blackwater, but sadly the house is now derelict.
The cushions are stuffed with cashmere pads which are slightly softer and rather more comfortable than horsehair.
