Regency 19th Century Giltwood Overmantle Mirror.

A Very Attractive 19th Century Regency Period Giltwood & Gesso Overmantle Mirror, Having Replacement Triple Mirror Plates, Enclosed By Exceptionally Carved Borders Incorporating S Scrolls, Anthemions, Patrae And Lotus Leaf Decoration.

As the name suggests overmantle mirrors original purpose was to either sit on, or just above, the mantelpiece in large 18th and 19th century homes. They are generally always low and wide so as to fit the space in an aesthetically pleasing way. That said they can generally be found in an extremely wide variety of different qualities, designs, sizes and shapes and this particular regency mirror is both unusual and attractive with its decoration.

We have rarely found the double carved border type design which surrounds the mirror plates and the carved decoration itself is exceptionally well executed and incredibly elegant. There is very little damage to speak of throughout, apart from a few minor old repairs to the carved decoration which now just blend in with the overall appearance of the item.

There are of course also various old marks, scuffs, scrapes, scratches etc which are consumeate with the age of the piece. As with most of our stock this item has been cleaned and polished in the traditional fashion within our workshops by our skilled and experienced craftsman before being offered for sale, meaning it is ready to go straight into the home.
