A rare pair of tôle peinte candle-sconces, French, circa 1820.
Originally 'lampes a quinquet' (oil lamps), the hollow oval-shaped backplate, originally an oil reservoir, still with small dome-shaped hinged cover, the projecting arm with removable drip-basin, removable conical-shaped shade, the dark-green ground highlighted in gilt with cornucopia, fleur-de-lys, floral swags and garlands.
For a comparable Egyptian herm wall-light from the workshops of Deharme, now in the Bibliothèque Marmottan, Paris, see N. de Reynies, 'Le Mobilier Domestique, Paris' (1987), vol.II, p. 731, fig. 2712.
