17th Century Japanese Arita Powder Blue Vases.

A rare pair of late 17th Century Japanese powder blue globular vases of small proportions.

This kind of decoration (solid blue background with overglaze gold decoration) is typical of Chinese porcelain.

Japanese potters attempted to replicate it but with less success hence the rarity of this colour scheme.

We only had one vase such as these before.

An interesting fact: a leaf of one of the two vases has been painted in green enamel and it was most probably a mistake during the decorating process.

Lamped for UK use with a handmade giltwood base and solid brass fitting; can be easily converted to EU or US Lampshades are not included.

Height excluding fitting: 34 cm.
