Rare Mid 14th Century English Oak Sculpture of St Mathew. Home Counties. Circa 1350.

This rare Pre-Reformation survivor has a wonderful slim elegant posture. His facial features are very appealing and serene. His flowing hair and curled and parted beard are typical of this period.

His elegant posture and sweeping drapery place this sculpture at the height of the "decorated style" in England, during the middle of the 14th century.

Due to the Reformation this is a very rare English sculpture to survive.

Private English collection.
