Produced in Arita, Hizen province, Japan, for the Western market, the jar of typical shouldered hexagonal form with a domed cover surmounted with a flattened knop finial decorated in underglaze-blue and iron-red, the jar and cover painted in iron-red, blue, black, yellow and turquoise enamels, each of the tapering sides alternately decorated with a long tailed pheasant perched amongst the branches of a tree peony with rockwork and grasses beneath, the sloping shoulders with quatre-lobed cartouches containing precious objects on a scrolling foliate ground divided by two peony flower heads in iron-red, the neck with a band of formed geometric design, the cover similarly decorated as the shoulder.
