Rare French Art Nouveau Leather Lined Marble Top Commode.

A wonderful and rare French Art Nouveau leather lined and bronze studded marble top commode.

French Circa 1900.

The black fossiliferous marble top with out-curved front corners above two long drawers embossed with leather ivy wreaths centred on tiny gilt bronze studs shaped to a spider’s webs within in-curved pilasters carved as rope-tied briars and conforming side panels.

A superb pure example of Art Nouveau displaying all the desirable features of this restless style and short period of furniture style before Art Deco took over. Reminiscent of the works of Majorelle, Galle or Guimard it has been difficult to ascribe a particular designers as this would appear to be a one-off…..which of course fits nicely into the Loveday ethos!

The construction is first class and obviously by one of the greats of this narrow timeline but who….!

This piece is worthy of any important 20th century collection.
