Rare Antique Bidjar Carpet.
3.26 x 2.50 m.
Antique Bidjar carpets from Northwest Persia are famed among Persian tribal village rugs for the high quality of their weaves and striking designs and colours. Bidjar is situated along a corridor between the borders of Persia, Anatolia, and the Caucasus, and this wide variety of cultural influences is well-reflected in the diverse range of styles and patterns represented in its carpets.
This beautiful 19th Century Bidjar carpet has a unique all-over design, with a rose motif inspired by earlier European textiles. The muted blue colour field has a natural colour variation (abrash), providing great contrast to the vegetable-dyed colours in the drawing, framed by a wide, decorative border. The colour palette includes tones of terracotta, tan, sage green and cornflower blue.
In very good practical condition for everyday use, with some very minor age-related wear, which gives the work a wonderful sense of character. It has still retained its original fringes on both sides.
A truly unique carpet, with a tribal charm to compliment a variety of settings.
