Queen Victoria Silver Card Case.

A rare Victorian silver Card Case of shaped rectangular form with hinged lid. The front and back decorated with tartan style engraving. The front engraved with a scene depicting Calton Hill in Edinburgh, a lady riding side-saddle on a horse to the foreground.

Probably intended to depict Queen Victoria who visited Edinburgh in 1842 (the same date that the card case was made). The reverse with a shaped cartouche depicting an exotic bird and a ewer of flowers. Complete with original fitted leather case.

By Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham 1842.

For a British monarch, Queen Victoria was extremely quick off the mark in making her first visit to Scotland in 1842, only five years after taking the throne.

She was greatly excited by Sir Walter Scott's novels and very anxious to make the acquaintance of her northern kingdom, which soon became one of her favourite haunts after the purchase of Balmoral Castle a few years later. The citizens of Edinburgh duly turned out to greet her.
