Permanent Secretary to the Treasury Despatch Box, 1970.

38cm (15in) x 25.5cm (10in) x 10.8cm (4.25in).

Black leather over wood ministerial box. Fitted with leather handle to the hinged spine to ensure the box is locked before being carried; the lid embossed with the gilt crowned EIIR cypher of Queen Elizabeth II (reigned 1952-2022) to the lid. The leading chamfered edge embossed ‘Permanent Secretary to the Treasury’. The interior fitted with ‘Secure 4 Lever’ lock.

The Permanent Secretary to the Treasury is generally regarded as the second most influential in the Civil Service. The post originated as Assistant Secretary to the Treasury in 1805 and was renamed the Permanent Secretaryship in 1867.
