ENGLAND, CIRCA 1805.
Of classical outline after the antique, with flaming finials to the spout, the curved handle in the form of an eagle’s head. With reversible lids. Each raised on acanthus and leaf-mounted circular socle.
The form of these lamps is inspired by Roman antiquity, particularly the tall, curling handle terminating in animal forms. An example of a Roman oil lamp of similar form can be found in the collection at the Louvre (object no. 1191).
