George III Silver Neoclassical Sauce Tureens.
A fine pair of antique silver George III sauce tureens of neoclassical form made in London in 1784 by William Holmes. The covers and bodies are half - fluted, with two loop handles and beaded borders and they are engraved with the original crest and coat of arms for the marriage on 28th February 1786 of Joseph Crompton of York to Anna Maria Rookes of Roydes Hall, Yorkshire. These elegant tureens have cast feet rather than hammered which gives them a very substantial feel. One tureen is hallmarked underneath the foot and the other on the side of the foot and both are correctly hallmarked with the standard mark on the rims of each lid. A very stylish pair of tureens of exceptional quality by a fine maker.
