A Pair of Furstenberg Groups of a Sultan and Sultana Modelled by Anton Carl Luplau

Faint trace of an F in underglaze blue to the underneath of the Sultana

Only two other pairs of these rare and unusually large models are recorded. One in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig (Museum nos. 1170 & 1171), the other in the Pflueger Collection now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The only other example of the Sultan group is in the Jack and Belle Linsky Collection (illustrated in the Metropolitan Museum catalogue, no. 217), no other examples of the Sultana group are known.

Anton Carl Luplau came to Furstenberg in 1759 as a bossierer’s apprentice and received training from the court sculptor, from 1770 he was the main modeller. He later became the arcanist and head modeller in Copenhagen.

Luplau modelled these groups after engravings in Count Charles de Ferriol’s Recueil de cent estampes représentant differentes Nations du Levant, 1714.

The Sultan group was later engraved by P. Simonneau after Jean-Baptiste Vanmour as Le Grand Seigneur dans le Sérail avec le Kislar Agassi, the Sultana is by G Scotin, La Sultane Asseki au Sultane Reine.
