Condition report

A particularly unusual pair of late C17th/early C18th oak side chairs with rare open work detailing flanking and beneath the fielded panel splats. The uprights terminate in satisfyingly graphic silhouette finials, two of which have been restored, and are joined at the top by plain rectangular crest rails with slightly arched centres. The joined frames are built onto the straight-through uprights and comprise of rectangular box stretchers which join the legs from front to back and the two back legs. The front legs are baluster turned and are joined by a single central turned stretchers. The plank seats are set upon the frame on shaped front rails and have moulded edge details. The chairs show evidence of age and use and bear scars and bruises, together with incidental losses all commensurate with age and function. Possibly from Derbyshire or Yorkshire, the chairs have a feel of the North Country vernacular about them, although we discovered them in the West country. A very interesting design, with excellent colour and surface.
