18th Century Mahogany Bedside Night Tables.

A Very Good Quality And Extremely Well Matched Pair Of 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Bedside Night Tables, Or Tray Top Commodes, Having Elegant Shaped Sides & Pierced Handles To Galleried Tops, Over Attractive Tambour Doors And Converted Pull Out Drawers With Brass Swan Neck Handles, Raised On Square Chamfered Legs.

These are a great example of the stereotypical Georgian bedside night table. At some point in their history they have been matched together into a pair, which is extremely common due to a relentless demand over many years for matching tables either side of a bed in combination to the relative scarcity and therefore extremely high price of any true pairs which can be found on the market at any given time.

The differences are relatively minor, with just some ever so slightly different mouldings in places, plus a tiny difference to width and depth. It is indeed quite possible that they were made in the same workshop originally. The tambour door is a very functional feature, meaning less space is required than those which have cupboard doors which open outwards. They also retain a good rich colour and patina.

This particular design continues to prove an extremely popular option for bedside tables due to the relative sturdiness, especially when compared to various other bedside options, the storage they are able to offer and the tray type tops which make it much less likely items perched on the top will get knocked over.

As with all items which we offer for sale these bedside tables have been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale, ensuring that they are ready to be placed immediately into the home.
