Mudhook Yacht Club Stickpin.

Circa 1880.

Crystal diameter: 13mm.

Essex Crystal and gold. Crossed burgee and race flag of an early member of the Mudhook Yacht Club. Cased.

The Mudhook Yacht Club was founded in 1873 by six yachtsmen in Boag’s Inn at Fairlie on the Firth of Clyde, who, dissatisfied with the local clubs, wished to ‘to encourage Corinthian yachting’ and not ‘to give expensive races for professional skippers steering their employers’ yachts’. They originally limited the membership to forty but extended it to 41 when the secretary realised he had not counted himself.
