Condition report

A rare miniature vernacular armchair, retaining historic painted surface and probably made as a craftsman's or tradesman's sample.  This example has a broad crest rail, decorated with stylised foliate motifs, above a spindle turned "X" form crossed rail back rest, between turned arms and arm rest supports with bobbin turned details, above the original woven rush seat.  The turned uprights run straight through to form all four legs, which are joined by box stretchers, the front one having a disc turned detail to the centre. The chair retains original painted surface and decorative detailing, with some inevitable incidental losses, scars and bruises commensurate with its age and materials. The surface has acquired an honourable aged character, which helps establish this as a particularly fine and rare early example in genuine "as found" original condition.
