A Magnificent and Rare Henry VIII English Oak Aumbry. Circa 1520.
This rare Tudor oak aumbry would have most probably adorned a Tudor great hall, the rarity of this magnificent cupboard is enhanced by the presence of central drawers, as drawers are seldom seen on early 16th century English furniture.
This example has a two boarded oak top with a chamfered edge above a configuration of three cupboards and two drawers. The top two deeply moulded doors with central cross decoration and iron handles, centred by a moulded panel again with cross decoration. Below are a pair of drawers carved to the front with stylised scroll decorations and again with iron drop handles, then central muntin to simulate a panel with a deep moulded central cupboard, flanked by two deep moulded panels, standing on stile feet.
Provenance-Winchester collection.
