Louis XV Tortoiseshell Boulle Clock

Impressive early tortoiseshell Boulle clock resting on it’s original bracket, profusely inlaid with scrolling brass inlay and mounted with fine quality ormolu.

Waisted case standing on four scrolling ormolu feet with central cartouche below a gilded starburst.  Ormolu acanthus leaf decoration to either side supporting the gilded dial with segmented enamel numerals and enamel centre signed ‘Gudin, Paris’ with finely cut original ‘blued’ steel hands. 

The case surmounted by a decorated cupola supporting an ormolu seated maiden.  The arch, glazed door enclosing marquetry veneered inside surface to the rear door and incorporating a richly cast panel decorated with rococo scrollwork to the lower edge.  The sides with tall recessed arch windows between marquetry panels.

Eight day, two train striking movement with rectangular plates united by four baluster pillars pinned through the backplate.

The going train with anchor escapement regulated by a pendulum, the strike train with outside countwheel striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell.  The backplate engraved ‘Gudin, Paris’.  C.1740

The ‘Dictionnaire Des Horlogers’ lists Abraham Gudin as being a master clockmaker working in Paris at the Quai Des Orfevres from c.1726 to c.1783
