The son of a builder, Goodwin was a pupil of Arthur Hughes and Ford Maddox Brown. In 1872 he was taken to Italy by John Ruskin and subsequently travelled extensively. He visited Egypt in 1876, India in 1895, North America in 1902 and 1912, and New Zealand in 1917.
The Lighthouse at Port Said was designed by François Coignet at the request of the Khedive of Egypt, Ismail the Magnificent and was opened a week before the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Unusually for the time, it was constructed in concrete and is 56 metres high.
Until 2013, the present drawing was in a Goodwin family album. Late in his life, Goodwin would rework his earlier works, add ink borders and assembly them in albums.
