The Meissen porcelain plaque is finely painted with the Sistine Madonna after a painting by Raphael. The original painting by Rapael was commissioned by Pope Julius ll for the Church of Sisto in Piacenza. The Meissen manufacture recreated this iconic image by finely painting it onto porcelain in the 19th century. The original painting now hangs in the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden.
Meissen blue crossed swords to back, Meissen c. 1880
