Large Dutch Boxwood Gingerbread Mould, Probably First Half 19th Century.

Intaglio carved with the figure of a gentleman.

Gingerbread dates from the 15th century, and figural biscuit-making was practiced in the 16th century. The first documented instance of figure-shaped gingerbread biscuits was at the court of Elizabeth I. She had the gingerbread figures made and presented in the likeness of some of her important guests. Decorated with gold leaf, added to place settings then devoured at royal feasts.

Comparable moulds to the present example are illustrated in Robert Deely's book 'The Cauldron, The Spit and The Fire', pages 235 and 236.
