Large circa 1900 Shirvan Soumac Carpet.

4.68 x 3.50 m.

Antique Soumac carpets from the Caucasus are exceptionally finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols native to the region, and are highly sought after due to their expressive, playful character and use of natural dyed colours.

This stylish early example has a wonderful palette, with a soft terracotta ground, and sage green, soft blue and ivory tones in its design, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes. This colour scheme works to compliment the grand-scale tribal drawing, featuring a stamped diamond pattern across the field.

This carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use. The original borders are retained on all four sides, as are the original unopened fringes – remarkable for a rug over 120 years old.

A wonderful Shivan Soumak carpet, an increasingly rare find in this condition and large format – an interesting example with a charming naivety which would make a tasteful addition to a classic or contemporary setting.
