A large Black Forest walnut wooden carving of an eagle, perched on a fall of rocks, crouching down with wings outspread and the head turned to the left, with black stained detailing on the feathers and  inset glass eyes.  Swiss, circa 1890.

Please see Arenski, Daniels and Daniels,  ‘Swiss Carvings, The Art of the ‘Black Forest’ 1820-1940’ Woodbridge 2005, pp. 88-90, for several similar studies of eagles dating from 1870 to 1890. One is carved by Alfred Stähli and the others by the famed Ruef brothers.
