An Indian carved hardwood elephant.
This hardwood stool is in the form of a caparisoned Indian elephant with wooden tusks, shown walking forwards with a curled trunk, the ceremonial trappings comprising a triangular head piece tapering to a large tassel and knee rolls beside the ears, the back cloth profusely carved with a central flowerhead, Indian gods, land and sea animals, vegetal scrolls and a tasselled fringe. Indian, circa 1880.
