Large Antique Heriz Carpet, circa 1920.

5.82 x 3.15 m.

Early Heriz carpets from north-west Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs, and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

This handsome early 20th Century example features a warm terracotta red central medallion, flanked by ivory spandrels, and well framed by a wide, muted indigo border - all in gracefully aged organic dyes. The drawing employs a series of bold, graphic motifs, repeated across the field in variety of warm, earthy colours, including sage green, tan, cornflower blue and ochre reds - a diverse yet well-balanced palette, well suited to this carpet's striking, all-over design.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides.

A wonderful piece - rare in this large format - with a tribal charm and character which would lend itself well to any setting.
